Dear Children.

Dear Children

While you are sleeping

And dreaming away in your beds,

Mammy is thinking and writing

And blinking

And kissing the tops of your heads.

You ask of me

Why is it bedtime?

You protest and hesitate so.

You dance around doing

Important one more things,

Till I chase around yelling

Let’s Go!

I wonder what you suppose

Goes on once you’ve all settled down?

Don’t you know it’s all dull?

There’s a silence, a lull

Like the Circus packed up

And left town.

Dear Children

While you are sleeping

I find space; I find peace for my head.

I think of today,

How fast time slips away,

Then I wait ‘till you sneak to my bed.

Here the comfort you seek

Is just waiting.

Yes, there’s space,

There’s a place made for you.

‘Cos the nights that you come

To wrap arms around mum

Will someday be sadly

So few.
